Used of a military force and of a political or territorial unit. For full treatment see MacNeill, PRIA xxix C 102 ff. , Hogan, xxxviii C 148 ff. Thurn., Heldensage 77 , suggests that t. c. in the sagas may not have represented an actual force of 3,000 men, but the force, a variable number, levied in the territory called t. c.
