n f., later m. (Lat. scriptura). Two distinct early borrowings are reflected in g s. screptaire, screptra (see below), the form scriptuir being due to learned influence (cf. Pedersen Vgl. Gr. i 211 , Ériu xxxiv 37 ). Length of -u- not attested by rhyming exx. in the early language. scriptuir, Ml. 25d12 . Cf. scriptúir, LU 2359 . scriptuir, 2374 . Freq. with -ú- in PH, see Atk. Gloss. Late rhyming exx. show -ú-: scrioptúir: iontnúidh, DDána 3.2 . : dhúinn, 27a.3 . Freq. with -í- in first syll. in Desid. g s. screptaire, Ml. 35b1 , 15 . sgrebtrae, ZCP iii 29.8 . Later screptra passim. na scriptuire , IT i 170.16 . na scripturi , PH 5516 . n p. na scripturi mora, Ml. 3a6 . scriptúri, PH 3122 . screptra, Cog. 138.24 . Leb. Gab.(i) 36.3 . sgreaptra, Content. xv 13 . g p. sgreaphtra, Auraic. 2640 . screaptradh, AFM i 132.12 . In later language usually indecl. in sg., but in Luc. Fid. 256 ff . regularly sgrioptur, g s. sgrioptuir. As suggested by Ed. g s. sgrioptúr, Desid. 4239 is probably a misprint. In this period the form scriptúir is the only one used in sense of holy scripture , the form screptra being confined to senses (b) and (c). Exceptionally trāchtairidhi in[na] screptra naoimhe, Fl. Earls 164.y .
