npr. m. Both 1 mael and 2 mael are largely used in the formation of masc. proper names (rarely fem.).

I Mael (adj.):

(a) seldom alone, treated as o- stem. M(ael), Ardm. 12b1 = Thes. ii 265 , Trip. 317.5 (equated with Lat. calvus, ib. 13 ). Mæl, Rawl. 130a55 . g s. Mail, 119a28 , 127a39 . meic Mail , Fél. 204.30 = m.¤ Mæil , Lism.L. 3976.

(b) in composition with a follg. noun which it qualifies. Maolbennachtaidh, BNnÉ 192.7 (-bhennacht v.l.). Cf. g s. Maelbennachtain, BB 88a22 . Maelcú, Lism. L. p. 315 (father of Brude king of the Picts). g s. Maelcon (of same), AU 583. Moelchú, Fél. 78.22 . Fergussan mac Maelcon, AU 702. Máellecán, Sg. 203 a ( Thes. ii p. xxii ), possibly represents a formation with g.s.

II Mael subst. is largely used folld. by (a) an adj., (b) gen. of a common noun, and (c) gen. of a proper name. a mbōi fo māil ZCP xi 149 § 9 . ba leanb óc (gl. maol) Ailill in tan sin, Ériu ii 182.8n , ZCP xliv 177 . The orig. meaning in class (a) was that of ` cropped head' or `head', in classes (b) and (c) of `slave' or `servant', hence `devoted to'; class (c) received its chief development after the introduction of Christianity, generally in combination with names of saints (in this connexion the meaning ` tonsured ' may have been implied; it is occasionally glossed calvus). A humorous extension of the usage occurs in the fictitious names Ocmæl- Blongi, Aisl. MC 77.23 ; Mælsaille mac Maílimme, 89.5 . Later gilla came to be used in the same way (see ZCP xii 301 , 313 for discussion of the subject). That these names are not true compds. is shown by (1) freq. declension of Mael as fem. subst., g s. Maíle (a follg. adj. being occasionally in agreement); (2) tmesis in poetry: Mael fial Finnia, AU 902 ; feil Mail chōir Canaigh, Mart. Gorm. Sept. 18 ; Mael caemfertach Cetair, May 14. Later they came to be regarded as compds. and in gen. Máel > Maíl or remains unchanged. Both gen. forms Maíle and Maíl- (Máel-) often occur side by side. Maíle is common in AU up to the year 850, then gradually gives way to Máel- folld. by lenition, and goes out of use by 950. (See Ó Máille, Lang. of Ann. Ulster, p. 52 n. ).
