n f. (earlier n, n. ? *ess-dithaim ?) etim, eataim, aitim IGT, Decl. § 13 . The primary meaning is uncertain; Meyer's analysis ( Wortk. 134 ) is wrong, as the initial is short and the following cons. voiceless ( etim: etill IGT, Decl. ex. 636 . Cf. Die Bürgsch. p. 12 ).

III In Laws applied to a species of pledge , apparently in a transferred sense; the most explicit ex. recorded is: etaim .i. gell do thuit ar eit do buith i tir comaithig a pledge which is forfeited (?) for cattle being on a neighbour's land O'Mulc. 467 . ettim ebraice robustoria (?), ar is ar niurt berair ib. diles cach n-etaim acht diroth cach techta iar re ┐ aputh ZCP xiii 23 y (see Die Bürgsch. p. 12 ). leath gacha hathgabala ina hindligedh athgabála...┐ ní tét etuim (.i. smacht) tar cúic bú do tuaith, Laws i 270.8 . ni [leg. in ?] mug...ni gaibther an-aetaim fri dlighidh...he, acht cos i nglais 104 y (with gl.: noca gabur a netmanugh- adh neich eile fris... 106.12 ). ni bi eataim iar fiachuib .i. nocha bi smacht roairde gotha no roísle gotha dona feichemnaib na orra iar cindiud a fiach, O'C. 1871 (= ataim 2281 ). i tuillem do febe .i. etuim slóigidh, O'D. 72 (< H 3. 17, col. 62 = Laws i 162.11 Comm. ). mad cona n-etman- naib .i. ma methaid ni dinn reir ┐ dind aurdligid .i. cona dilsi don flaith .i. narup gat na aurrach `' ZCP xvi 206 (= O'C. 828 < H 3.18, 380a ).
